This article is a list of the products I use on my hair.
My specific goals with my hair are to:
- detox and recondition my hair
- restore its original color
- detox and improve the health of my scalp
Read more about My Hair Adventure to understand better why I am exploring this area of wellness, what I am trying, and what is working.
In combination these products are working – my hair has definitely regained some of its color and the condition is noticeably improved. The quality of my hair has improved. It is less dry, slightly thin spots are thickening, and it is more luscious.
Please note that restoring your hair takes time. There are mental aspects to it, exploration, learning to accept the hair you have now in the moment, finding like-minded thinkers, and more.
As with all content on this website, these are the products I take and use. I purchase them myself (no free product) and have researched and selected them independent of any financial interest. The links to the products are not affiliate links (which means I will not earn anything when you click these links). I also do not track click-throughs on my links.
Fermented Cod Liver Oil
I take Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil with Concentrated Butter Oil. I started taking it in 2017 to increase my Vitamin A intake using a food source. I will admit I am not the best at taking it daily. But when I do my skin is automatically more smooth. Many women report that when they take FCLO (the abbreviation) they regain color in their hair. I take the capsules. That’s a good place to start if the taste scares you. We also have the gel (unflavored) and the taste is no big deal for us.
Hair Re-Vive
This product has really helped my hair – Hair ReVive. I took it initially for two months straight, 4 capsules per day as directed on the bottle. At the end of the two months both my family and my hair stylist noticed a difference. One day a strand of hair came out of my head and we could see that it had recolored close to the scalp. The other end was white. Hair ReVive is made by Ridgecrest Herbals. Their mission is to “craft the world’s finest botanical supplements”. Hair ReVive contains Fo-Ti Stem which “though the body of scientific work is still scanty, evidence exists that it has antioxidants that support various functions in the body including the maintenance of natural hair color.”
Organic Castor Oil
I learned about the benefits of castor oil and this particular brand from Rebecca Huff of That Organic Mom (tip – go read her blog, it is PACKED with helpful information and resources). I started using castor oil in 2020 based on her recommendation. I use it two ways. Please be aware that this is for topical use only. People sometimes confuse it with cod liver oil (possibly because they both begin with “c” and we’ve lost our familiarity with both products). Do not take castor oil internally!
First way I use castor oil: Every few weeks I spread the oil all over my head and hair. I leave it on for a few hours, then wash it out. It’s very sticky (consider yourself warned!) but feels wonderful. Castor oil is thought to stimulate hair follicles.
Second way I use castor oil: I apply castor oil most mornings. I use it to tame fly-away hair, to keep my eyebrows tidy, and any place my hair is thin, white, or my scalp is itchy. Doing this for a year now has yielded a lot of benefits for me. When I started taking Hair ReVive in combo with this castor oil practice – my eyebrows thickened! It was genuinely the coolest thing. The outer third of my eyebrows were a little sparce. It didn’t bother me but a friend noticed since it is often a symptom of thyroid issues (which I don’t have). Watching the outer third grow new hair and thicken was truly amazing.
This is the specific product I use. Want to support a woman-owned small business? Go to this podcast article on the That Organic Mom website and click on her link for Castor Oil. It’s an affiliate link and you’ll be helping her be successful in her business. Bonus for you – that article and podcast are great, and I think you’ll enjoy the discussion Rebecca and I had about our hair.
Tribal Mama Shampoo Bar
Hats off to Tribal Mama for giving me a trial size shampoo bar to try one day! I was oh so leery of a shampoo bar! One day I used it because I ran out of my shampoo. WOW! IMMEDIATELY noticed how nice it was. It’s very easy to use. I LOVE her specific shampoo bar and use it most of the time. I have not used liquid shampoo since I switched (except maybe 2x at the hair salon for a hair cut). By the shampoo bar at her Etsy shop. It is not always in stock – that’s because she is a lovely small business and this is a carefully crafted hand-made product. So it can be scarce. If it’s out of stock, send her a message to tell her you want to buy some.
Morrocco Method Shampoo Bar
The Morrocco Method Shampoo Bar is luxurious. If you’ve never tried a shampoo bar – this one is also a great place to start. In the end I have found that this bar is a little heavy on my hair.
