People are always asking my what I use on my hair.
As in shampoo, conditioner, styling, etc. Tools too like hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons.
This post introduces you to the products I’m currently using and why, plus links to purchase if you would like. As always … these links are not affiliate links (which means I don’t earn any commission or free product for these recommendations).
CANARY IN THE MINE SYNDROME
As with most of my Wellness Adventures, the care of my hair has been impacted over the years by what I call “Canary in the Mine Syndrome.” Here’s a list of specific issues I faced with both grocery store and salon products. I offer this list in case you have ever run into issues. It’s not possible for me to say 100% the products caused these issues. But in most cases the symptom immediately followed use of the product. In the United States there are many chemical ingredients in personal care products that have been banned in other countries. Over 1,700 in fact. In the past when I voiced concern about how a product affected me my concerns were usually dismissed. Salon staff would say things like “I’ve just never heard of that happening.” Implying that there was something wrong with me and that was the reason I had a problem. If any of that sounds familiar just know you’re not alone. Smile a little smile and start exploring other options for your hair care. Consider leaving service providers who do not take your concerns seriously. I have literally met hundreds of people who had problems like mine. So I know it’s a lot more common than some people lead me to believe.
- Burned skin along my hair line
- Irritated by the smell of the products (to the point of giving me headaches, nausea, upset stomach)
SHAMPOO
I experimented for 5 years at least with shampoo I purchased at natural grocery stores. Brands I tried include:
Currently I wash with a shampoo bar. Specifically I use the one from Morrocco Method. I have also purchased locally from a wonderful small business called Tribal Mama. I have to thank Tribal Mama. If she had not given me a sample shampoo bar to try – I probably never would have gone in this direction. I mean it’s just a big shift mentally when you’ve been using shampoo out of a bottle for the better part of 50 years.
