Booklists at BookShop

August 31, 2024 by Sarah

My booklists at Bookshop.org are a quick way to find the wellness books I read and recommend!

What is Bookshop?

The number one place that people buy books today is Amazon.com. Amazon makes it easy to buy books – they carry so many titles in their online store, they offer a platform for people to self-publish, they have ebook and audio book options, and their shipping is super fast.

So why should we consider buying books anyplace else? And how can it be a wellness thing for us to buy books elsewhere?

Enter Bookshop.org.

In their own words:

“Bookshop.org works to connect readers with independent booksellers all over the world.
‍We believe local bookstores are essential community hubs that foster culture, curiosity, and a love of reading, and we’re committed to helping them thrive.”

“Every purchase on the site financially supports independent bookstores. Our platform gives independent bookstores tools to compete online and financial support to help them maintain their presence in local communities.”

Why I Buy New Books From Bookshop

Bookshop is the place I buy most of my new books.

Bookshop is a place where you can vote with your dollars much more effectively than when you buy on Amazon. For each purchase you can designate an independent bookstore to benefit from your purchase. That’s a wellness thing for our communities.

Because of the way that Bookshop integrates with independent bookstores, they are helping to preserve the power of curation and diversity of content. These two terms refer to the unique selection that each bookstore brings to the marketplace. If we only buy from Amazon, then we basically only buy from one curator. When we buy from Bookshop we reinforce the curation of thousands. Which brings wellness into our lives. It gives us dramatically more choice, while Amazon is sometimes only the illusion of choice.

I don’t want to damn Amazon too much. I am a fan of their self-publishing platforms. But I do believe in spreading the vote of our individual dollars around in the marketplace.
